Experience/Introduction: WORSHIP INSTALLATION
(Posted by Jonathan Turtle)
It’s 10:00am and I’m finally in Hamilton. Hamilton has a lot of one way streets which can be frustrating when you’re not used to that sort of system. Anyways, this is my first experience at a Cultivate gathering. I arrived a little early to grab a coffee. I’m currently sitting on a couch enjoying my drink as I type this. As I look around there are clusters of people spread out throughout the Freeway space engaged in all sorts of lively conversation. Freeway is a neat little space by the way. It’s right downtown Hamilton and the walls are covered in art (presumably by local artists). There’s a DJ up at the front playing some sort of house/ambient music (I don’t listen to house, but this is what I imagine it would sound like!). I’ve met a few folks from a church community in Stratford. I drove down from Toronto this morning so it seems that there’s folks here from all over southern Ontario. This is my first church planting gathering I’ve been to and from my observations the folks here are predominantly middle-class Anglo-saxon males (though not entirely). That’s more of an observation than a critique.
Alright Pernell is spitting hot fire on the mic welcoming people and captivating our attention with the promise of a free-DVD-giveaway. “The people speaking are not shlubs,” says Pernell. We’ll see about that. Oh, Jessica just won the DVD for having a birthday in March. Kudos Jessica.
Randell begins by playing some scripture which sounds to me like it’s being read by Johnny Cash. The scripture is John 1. I wish I could hear the entire Bible read by Johnny Cash. As the scripture repeats itself Randell is starting to mix it with some ambient sounds. “In him was life and the life was the light of men.” The same portion of John 1 keeps looping which is actually kind of cool. It’s also neat to experience it with music. Kind of makes me wish I brought my glow-sticks. This is obviously not the sort of thing you’d experience in most North American evangelical churches. Then again, most of the people that are here this today are probably here because they’re seeking to be involved in church communities that don’t look/feel/sound like your average N.A. church (i.e. we’re gathered in a coffee house that is also a meeting space for a church community). That was a neat way to start the day with a unusual reflection on John 1. Thanks Randell.
I’m looking forward to the rest of the day here.
Peace//JT.

You actually can get the entire new testament read by Johnny Cash. Which is very cool. I only have the first half of John as a sample disc but I would like to get the rest.
